This message is meant to be inclusive of everyone. We want full participation! Please forward!
Flagstaff Biking Organization and Flagstaff Gravity Riders are about to begin undertaking our biggest project ever: the design and construction of the Ft. Tuthill Mountain Bike Park.
We want a bunch of involvement from the community for two reasons:
- We want this park to be successful. In order for it to be successful, people will need to use it. In order for people to use it, it has to include the right features. We need to know from everyone what sorts of features the park should include. We will be hiring a professional bike park design company to create a site plan and budget. We will be hosting a public meeting for folks to submit their ideas for the park. We may need some assistance with the funding of this initial planning.
- This park will be expensive. (Think around $200,000-$500,000). For various legal and liability reasons, the park must be constructed by contractors and not volunteers. We will need community donations, grants and sponsors to fund the construction of the park. We will need the support and involvement of the community to get this money. FBO/FGR members involved in the coordination of this project are all volunteers, only contractors and hired professionals and materials will be paid for with these funds.
It is Flagstaff Biking Organization’s/Flagstaff Gravity Rider’s intent to partner with Coconino County Parks and Recreation to have this park be free and open to the public most of the time. There may be seasonal and/or event closures, but generally the facility should be free to use. In order for this approach to be successful, we will need funding to build the park! Coconino County P&R will be taking on the maintenance costs, which are not inconsequential, and we may need to continue to raise money to that end as well, but that will be determined at a later date.
We have approval from the Coconino County Board of Supervisors through their approval of the Ft. Tuthill Master Plan.
For now we are asking for two things:
- If this park is something that interests you, please stay tuned and make time to become involved in the upcoming planning meeting. We are working out the details to have a contractor come to Flagstaff and get public input, work with stakeholders and do an overall site plan for the park within a month or two.
- If you are interested in donating money to this cause or if you are aware of grants or donations that might be available, please help to bring them to our attention or write us a check. We will be working on the details for recognizing sponsoring businesses equitably in the near future, so if your business is interested in sponsoring an aspect of the park or the overall park, we will have criteria available shortly. Also, we will be putting some sort of web tool live to be able to take donations for this project.
We will be publishing more details on the Park planning and construction soon, but we wanted to get everyone up-to-speed sooner rather than later.
