After 5 years of waiting, we have begun to build THE LOOP TRAIL!
You might think the sketchy weather on Saturday would slow down the work we had planned. BUT NO! Our crack team of dedicated volunteers kicked some serious dirt, rocks and butt! Go check out the pictures on our images page or the article in the Arizona Daily Sun or Jack’s column. Thirty brave souls were not detered by the scary forecast and gave a terrific opener for the LOOP TRAIL. The day was beautiful, actually.
Thanks to Fratelli’s Pizza for a yummy lunch and Late for the Train for Hot Coffee. Great on a blustery morning.
Since 2003, much of Flagstaff has anticipated this legacy 42 mile recreational trail that will surround Flagstaff. Over 70% of the trail will be singletrack trail, and all of it is NON-MOTORIZED! While about half of the trail is complete, over 13 miles of singletrack need to be built or converted from abandoned forest service roads. And that’s where you come in. Most of this construction will have to be completed by trail crew volunteers LIKE YOU!
Cyclists, Hikers, Trail-runners, Dog-walkers and Horseriders ALL! Help the trails you use and love! Invite your Friends!
The first trail day, Saturday, October 11th, was devoted to the trail just east of the Elden Springs on the Forces of Nature/ Spring Trail on the southern flanks of Mt Elden. This great trail is in need of TLC and you CAN HELP! Our next (and final 2008) trail day is November 8th, weather permitting.
Please meet us at 8:00 AM, October 11, at Christiansen Grade School (here’s a map) parking lot, about 3 blocks north of the Mall on Cummings (turn at the Pizza Hut). Follow the signs to the staging area about 4 blocks west on El Paso Dr and Hamblin. BRING WIND PROTECTION and LAYERS.
Join us for coffee and a brief safety meeting at 8am. We will work until lunch time, (generously provided to us by Fratelli Pizza!) have a RAFFLE Drawing, then reconvene afterwards to learn how to install signs for the trail (we will eventually put up 100 signs on the trail).
Trail building is fun, you meet great folks who share your love of Flagstaff Trails, and you become part of the legacy of the Loop Trail in this great town.
Please come with sturdy shoes, long pants, water, sunscreen, and a hat or bike helmet; and gloves if you have some. We will provide hard-hats, tools and equipment, guidance and training. Kids under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
FUN! FREE LUNCH! RAFFLE PRIZES!
You can help us prepare the First Loop Trail Day by pre-registering. We can better estimate lunch, coffee and equipment quantities with your help. THANKS!
