If you FBO can’t fill your need to grub about in the dirt, build trail and karma, here are some other programs that do trail construction around Flagstaff in the summer.

June 16-17 – Coconino Rim

Come join Tom Coulson in trail maintenance on this section of the Arizona Trail south of Grandview point near Grand Canyon. This work will be trail MAINTENANCE only from Grandview Lookout Tower south in tall pines. Great views and dispersed camping in the National Forest. We’ll be removing lots of pinecones, pine needles and rocks, with the occasional downed tree (we’ll saw them out).
The work will be on Saturday, June 16th and Sunday, June 17th (til noon). Overnight accommodations would be to camp in the National Forest (dispersed camping) or you could stay in the village of Tusayan about 16 miles west of the work site.
To get there go north from Williams on State Highway 64 to Tusayan (just outside the south gate of the Grand Canyon). As soon as you enter town (before you pass the Grand Hotel on the right) you’ll see a dirt road heading east (right). Take this; it is Forest Road 302 (passable for 2WD vehicles in good weather). Follow 302 east (no turnoffs) for about 8.5 miles to a fork where it goes right on FR 301 or left still on 302. Stay left on 302 about 4 miles to the junction of FR 302 and FR310 (1 mile south of Grandview fire lookout tower) – this is the group campsite. We’ll meet here at the group campsite at 7:30 AM, to assign work crews. The work area is from here south.
Bring gloves, hats and snacks. The ATA will provide the tools and instructions. It will be great to see you up here on this pristine section of the Arizona Trail. Great mountain biking on this segment too!
NOTE:  If you choose to enter thru GCNP you’ll have to go through the south gate and possibly pay an entrance fee. If you enter on FR 301 (as outlined above) you are not in the park and there is no fee. This work event is supported by the Tusayan Ranger District.
We look forward to seeing you at the group campsite (junction of FR302 and FR310) at 8 AM Saturday or see you Friday evening. Work begins at 8 AM. Tom Coulson at 480-326-0459 or e-mail at aztrailhiker@aol.com.

June 23-24 – Walnut Canyon

Please plan to join the Segment Stewards, Andrea and David Michaels and Gay and Gary Hohner for a fun weekend on the Arizona Trail. We will be holding a trail work event sponsored by the Arizona Trail Association and the Flagstaff Ranger District of the Coconino National Forest on the Arizona Trail Walnut Canyon Passage. The work location will be just a few miles southeast of Flagstaff. The weather should be perfect, a fun time to be on the Arizona Trail. We will be doing a reroute of one section of the trail plus installing an ATA Cox gate in an existing fence line and general trail maintenance of a beautiful stretch of the trail.
There will be a nice camping site and potluck dinner on Saturday night. The ATA will provide lunch on Saturday and portable toilets at the camp site. Tools, hard hats and gloves will also be provided.
Please plan to join us. You can signup anytime by email to sghohner@cox.net. Detailed instructions for the event and directions to the work site will be provided about 7-10 days before the event.

Ft. Valley Trails maintenance with the Coconino Trail Riders

Coconino Trail RidersThe Coconino Trail Riders (CTR) is a motorcycle club with a passion for singletrack trail riding. They began in the 1970’s as various iterations of loosely knit group(s) of riding buddies, but due to a constantly changing scene of forest use and users, they decided to re-invent CTR into a group of responsible trail and forest users.

Early in 2003 they began the process of forming a Not for Profit, 501 (c)(3) corporation and have achieved that status.

They are dedicated to the creation and preservation of motorized/multi-use singletrack trails and trail systems which are sustainable and harmonious with ecological, cultural and social concerns.

This year, as in past years, they will be having several Trail Days where they will be constructing and maintaining singletrack trails with the US Forest Service, primarily in the Fort Valley area.

Specifically, their primary focus will be to complete the re-route of “Secret Trail” to mitigate the disturbance of a known Spotted Owl nesting area, this being a goal of both the US Forest Service and the US Fish & Wildlife (USFWS).

CTR invites all who share their love of the Coconino National Forest and the Secret Trail system to join them for their Trail Days listed below.
