Loop Trail Day October 3rd at SKUNK Canyon!

October 3rd’s Loop Trail Day once again returns to Skunk Canyon/Ridge.

We continue to work on the legal issues with the Observatory Mesa easement will delay, so don’t despair… WE WILL RETURN! Meanwhile, we built some great new trail above Skunk Canyon on our last day and we will continue to build this high quality trail toward the Fisher Point trail. Saturday’s long-range forecast? “clear- high 68″-–a perfect fall day.

DIRECTIONS: Take Lone Tree Road south to J.W. Powell Blvd and turn left/east. Go to the barricades and turn into Pine Canyon Club’s NORTH entrance: Important! Get a visitor’s pass at the booth. Follow signs: take an immediate left on Clubhouse Circle, drive 1.3 miles and turn left/east on Del Rae, following it 0.6 miles to the end circle. We will stage in front of “Lot 191″. Try this mapquest MAP.

Please come with sturdy shoes, long pants, water, sunscreen, and a hat or bike helmet; and gloves if you have some. Consider bringing raingear, weather is changesome. We will provide hard-hats, tools and equipment, guidance and training. Kids under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

The Loop Trail needs your HELP!

We got a great start on this trail in June; but we will need more volunteer trail builders to reach our goal to sew the trail into a Loop by this fall! So please help us! Trail building is fun, you meet great folks who share your love of Flagstaff Trails, and you become part of the legacy of the Loop Trail in this great town. Saturday’s cooling forecast = “Partly cloudy, High 77″.–Perfect!

We are staging once again on Observatory Mesa. Follow our signs 1.8 miles from Thorpe Rd near the Bark Park, north to Kinlani Dr, R on Curling Smoke Rd, R on Hogan Dr to cattle guard on left. Here’s a google MAP. The quarter mile of road after the cattle guard is a little rough. Our passenger car did fine, but some may prefer to hike or bike that last bit or carpool with other trail volunteers.

We will serve coffee at 8am, followed by a short trail safety talk. Work begins at 8:30 and goes until lunch time and a raffle drawing.

If there is interest (and energy), we will do a short 5-10 mile Mt Bike ride on Observatory Mesa following the trail event around 2pm.

Join the last trail day for the season on Saturday, November 8th! Please PRE-REGISTER!

The November Loop Trail Day will be held off Lake Mary Road between the water plant, Skunk Canyon and Pine Canyon Club. Here’s a MAP on where to meet. Saturday’s FORECAST = “Sunny, High 59″.

Meet us at 9:00 AM on XY Ranch Road: Turn east off of J. W. Powell Blvd near Lake Mary road, follow the signs 0.2 miles east to the staging area.

We will work until lunch time, and raffle off some great prizes. Trail building is fun, you meet great folks who share your love of Flagstaff Trails, and you become part of the legacy of the Loop Trail in this great town.

Please come with sturdy shoes, long pants, water, sunscreen, and a hat or bike helmet; and gloves if you have some. Dress in layers, weather is changesome. We will provide hard-hats, tools and equipment, guidance and training. Kids under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Giro de Luna 2008

We had a fantastic group and a beautiful night for this year’s Giro de Luna. Led by Jack Welch and Martin Ince, more than 25 riders of all ages rode the urban trail and through quiet neighborhoods by the light of the full moon and a handful of headlamps. Thanks to all who organized this event and those whose participation made it so much fun!

July 12ths Trail Day: Kachina Wetlands / Highlands Trail

We had a great turnout for this event to complete the singletrack bridging Pine Dells to Kachina Wetlands. (See the trails!). About 35 folks turned out and we completed the connection to the power-line trail. GREAT JOB PEOPLE! We had some intermittent cloud cover, the spicy smell of the night’s rain on grasses, lots of flowers, and the storm waited until after lunch to let loose… just in time to interrupt the Youth Mt Bike Program’s testing of our new trail. Nevertheless, testing was completed on the brand new and newly wetted trail…excellent conditions except for a little of the devil’s clay on one of the wetland’s trails. (think of the entrance to Oldham trails…). Go to the Images page for photos of the days work and the following trail ride.

Next Trail Day is July 26th: An Arizona Trail day in cooperation with NATRA and ATA. We will work on bridging the gap of the 16 miles of the AZ trail that happen to be here abouts. Go HERE for more details.

We will break for lunch around 12:30 pm (thanks to Biff’s Bagel’s) and give out some fab raffle prizes. You will have the afternoon to test out our new trail or visit your other favorites.

Trail days has projects for folks of all ages and physical abilities. Our Trail Crew volunteers and partner agencies, the Coconino National Forest Peaks Ranger District, Arizona Trails and NATRA are bringing all of us great trails to care and share. More questions? FBO teams with IMBA for two great events

Did you see an IMBA (International Mountain Bicycling Association) Subaru in town this weekend? Anna and Jason, one of the traveling Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crews, came to Flagstaff to meet with local trail builders and managers and to lead a workshop on sustainable trail design and building. On Saturday, they gave an interesting and informative presentation to a full room at the Forest Service office near the Flagstaff Mall, then took the group out to check out nearby trails and to practice trail layout. On Sunday, they rode from Campbell Mesa to Fisher Point, joining the Youth Mountain Biking Program group for several miles at the beginning and end of the ride. Youth Mountain Biking Program Sedona ride

Weather permitting, the next YMBP ride will be on Sunday, February 24. We will carpool from Flagstaff and start our ride at the Absolute Bikes shop in the Village of Oak Creek. FBO Youth Mountain Biking Program Sedona ride

Our third Youth Mountain Biking Program ride of the winter was in beautiful Sedona on Saturday, January 12. We had a great group of kids and adults for a long, fun loop. There were no major crashes and five flat tires didn’t slow us down too much. Thanks to Absolute Bikes for the use of their van to carry kids and bikes. Youth Mountain Bike rides begin

FBO’s Youth Mountain Biking Program gets underway for the season on Saturday, April 28! Our first ride will be at Campbell Mesa, starting at 2 p.m. The trailhead is past the Continental ballfields and driving range on Old Walnut Canyon Rd. This fun, educational program is designed for kids ages 10-14, but some kids as young as 8 have ridden with us regularly.
