THANKS for great Loop Trail help Saturday

We had a fantastic turnout for Loop Trail work Saturday Aug 15th. Flagstaff can deliver! FBO, Coconino County, Coconino Forest Service and the City of Flagstaff send their thanks to the 54 generous spirits that donated their time to complete Segment 55 of the Loop Trail on Observatory Mesa.

Next stop… Segment 56… the challenging and beautiful final link to Cheshire. We’ll need your help even more for that final piece, be sure to Save the Dates.. September 19th, October 3rd, and November 7th!

Thanks also to Biff’s Bagels, Late for the Train and Coconino County Supervisor Matt Ryan for sponsoring Saturday’s event. We’ve completed over 1.5 miles of trail this summer!

Moonlight Madness!!

This year’s Moonlight Madness ride glowed with 50 blinking, flashing and sparkling riders of all ages riding from downtown to Fort Tuthill Park and back; about 11 miles. We had a beautiful nearly full moon and surprisingly crisp weather for our great, enthusiastic group. We are already getting suggestions to start next year’s Madness with a barbeque and a band… who knows! Lots of people showed interest in more frequent Moonlight rides… if you would like to help plan and implement such rides, Let US KNOW HERE!

Take Action to Increase Opportunities for Bicycling in National Parks

At long last, the U.S. National Park Service (NPS) has proposed a rule change which will make it easier for parks to open trails for mountain biking. IMBA, (International Mountain Bicycling Association), urges mountain bikers to register comments in support of the rule change. IMBA has been asking for this change since the 1990s. This rule would still require a full NEPA, (National Environmental Policy Act), analysis to open a trail to bicycles, but would ease the current special regulation requirements.

Go to IMBA’s website to read more details and submit your comments to the National Park Service.

Comments must be received by February 17th, 2009.

Call to Artists for Bike to Work Week Art! Deadline March 1st!

Are you or someone you know an artist? FBO is seeking artwork to represent our signature bike event, BIKE TO WORK WEEK 2009.

The artwork should represent biking and the phrase “Bike to Work Week” and “2009″, and may include work or school images, or May 10-15th. Any cyclists depicted must be wearing a helmet.

The winning artist will get $200, exposure on the FBO website, T-shirts and BTWW advertising. And fame, of course.

If you, or an artist you know (please forward this announcement to them) would like to compete, please submit artwork to Flagstaff Biking Organization, P.O. Box 23851, Flagstaff, AZ 86002, or email it to info@flagstaffbiking.org.

Entries must be received by March 1st!

Join Flagstaffbiking’s First Annual Festival of Bikes!

Come One, COME ALL! Have a Bicyclin’ Blast at the Orpheum and Help FBO!

The Flagstaff Festival of Lights Parade is a 10-year Flagstaff Tradition, but this is the first year we will have a FBO fundraiser holiday party at the Orpheum to complement! Join us for lots of fun with pictures with Santa on a bike, live music, a bike raffle, hot and cold beverages, recycled bike sales and cycles of FUN! And help FBO in a membership and fundraiser drive to support Bike to Work Week, kids’ safety programs, trail programs, and More! It’s all good!

Kids can get their picture taken with Santa and a bike from 4 pm to 7 pm.
Adults can get their picture taken with Santa, the Elfettes, and a bike from 7pm to 9pm.

$5 per sitting includes a photo with options to buy more sets.

Bashas’ Shop & Give Program-Give $ to FBO by buying groceries!

Just in time for your Thanksgiving shopping trip, With Bashas’ Shop & Give, customers can shop for groceries as usual, and Bashas’ will give 1% of their shopping dollars to the local nonprofit of their choice. FBO’s number is 24120! Give this number to your cashier the next time you shop at Bashas’. FBO will automatically receive 1% of your grocery purchase amount, and that can add up for FBO!

Festival of Bikes-Orpheum December 13th!

Flagstaff considers a new ordinance requiring helmets on cyclists under 18 years of age.

FBO joins with Flagstaff Mayor Sara Presler in an initiative to require minors under 18 to wear helmets while biking. We can emulate other progressive communities that have successfully implemented similar laws. Besides teaching kids at an early age to bike responsibly and protect their greatest asset–their brain–getting young cyclists into the habit of wearing helmets saves lives and the compounding expense of head trauma to families and society. Help us pass this law by writing or emailing FBO a letter of support here!

Make your opinion on the County Parks count!

Coconino County is holding a meeting to review its Parks and Recreation Master Plan through the year 2019. Let them know what you want! The meeting in Flagstaff is Tuesday, December 2nd from ~2:45 – 4:45pm, at 219 E. Cherry Avenue. There will be 30 meetings within the county, check their agenda for upcoming details.

Help FBO pass a Bike Helmet law for Minors

Flagstaff Biking needs the support of Flagstaff residents to pass this ordinance that would require minors younger than 18 years of age to wear a bike helmet when biking. The specifics of the law are not ironed out, you can help us by giving your comments and we ask you to provide us with a letter of support that we can present to the city of Flagstaff council.

Many communities around the country and Arizona have passed similar laws (including Tucson, Yuma, Globe and others). Most by incentive programs that emphasizing rewarding those children that comply with the law, as well as with modest penalties imposed after an appropriate period of public education and encouragement.

Support the proposal to require children under 18 to wear a helmet in Flagstaff. Teaching children this simple and effective habit can save our kids, our families, and our community the pain and heartbreak of head injuries and multiplies the savings in health costs.

FBO Welcomes T.C. Eberly as newest board member

Flagstaff Biking proudly announces the addition of Thomas “T.C.” Eberly as their newest board member. T.C. was unanimousy approved as a board member in the October FBO board meeting.

T.C. is a member of the Flag Velo executive board and has recently shifted his focus from amatuer race promotion to community events. He adds a long history of event planning in Flagstaff including the Summit Center Classic and Arizona State Championship Road Races, and has supported FBO’s mission since its inception. He has frequently helped with FBO SafeKids Rodeos, Bike to Work Week events, and others. In addition, he was a finalist in the 2008 NBRCDO (National Bike Rodeo Course Design Olympics). FBO looks forward to his help in planning future events and fundraisers.
