2009 Schedule of Events
2009 EVENT SCHEDULE:
May 10th – Sunday: 9 am to 2 pm
Heritage Square Downtown Flagstaff
Kick off the week with hundreds of your bicycling brethren.
People Powered Parade:
Everyone loves a parade, but why are they always full of pollution spewing cars and trucks with people inside waving? Flagstaff can do better. If you can pull it, push it, ride it, carry it, or wear it: Bring It ON!. The more outrageous the better! The parade route will be about 2 miles and flat. Starts downtown at the City of Flagstaff parking lot south of the Library on Aspen at 11 AM. Awards will be given to the two best decorated bikes or bike ensembles.
Bike Bazaar
Building on the success of previous years we are increasing the number of activities in the square so that there will be something for everyone from the newbie, to commuter to racer, young and old. We are advertising the events throughout the state so we should see a good turnout for the events.
A great opportunity to cheaply stock up on needed and/or desired bike gear. Tables are available for a $20 donation to set up your wares for sale. (You can split tables with friends.) As with last year, we are expecting buyers and sellers from across AZ. Flagstaffians have some great gear!
Bike Recycling
Get a great deal on refurbished bikes and support FBO. FBO will fix up donated bikes and get them to people who need them.
May 11th – Monday
Time to dust off your ride, register your workplace and prepare to flood the streets, paths, and bike lanes, with fun loving cyclists.
Bike to Work Challenge – Monday through Friday
This year, the Bike to Work challenge lasts ALL WEEK!, from Monday morning to Friday midnight. The two winning worksites of the commuter challenge get a beautiful new Breezer Freedom commuter bike to use for local errands. Coordinators volunteering for each participating business will encourage their coworkers to try bicycle commuting; lowering their carbon footprint, feeling healthier, and reducing congestion on Flagstaff streets.
Kick-off Commuter Ride from City Hall – 7:30 am
Come join local elected leaders, officials, and hundreds of your friends for a short “commuter” ride through downtown to finish in Heritage Square for a free breakfast. Hundreds of cyclists sharing the roads makes a statement. The gathering at Heritage Square will celebrate the efforts of specific worksites and individuals to improve biking and walking in our community.
The Brick Award will be given to a community member that has gone above and beyond the call of duty for cycling in Flagstaff.
BTWW Ride & Repair Monday @ the Green Room: 3-6 pm
The Green Room is sponsoring it’s own event in conjunction with Bike to Work Week. They invite you to come in for a relaxing afternoon of learning about and tuning your bike and your body.
Bike mechanics, masseuses and yoga instructors will be on hand to help with basic bike & rider maintenance and adjustments, and there will be drink and food specials as well. Contributions will benefit FBO!
May 12th – Tuesday
Cruiser Ride – Further Excellent Adventures of Jack & Martin on the FUTS: Starts at 6 pm
We are having a cruiser ride Tuesday night starting at Altitudes Bar & Grill on Beaver Street. Come on out and join in the two wheeled fun. Bring out your townies, your Schwinn tandems and your old balloon tired pride and joy or even that ol’ Ti or Carbon thang ya got lying around. Ride starts at 6:00 pm. The ride will explore Flagstaff’s Urban Trail System with uniformed police escort to keep cars at bay. All riders welcome.

May 14th – Thursday
Bike to School Day!
FBO encourages parents, teachers and administrators to support and encourage (or accompany) students to bike to school more. We celebrate our younger bike commuters on this day with Bike to School activities.
We are encouraging parents to ride with their kids to school or in the case of high school students: leave the car at home for a day.
- We all need to teach Flagstaff’s youth that the joy of bike commuting can compete with couch-time.
- A “Golden Sprocket” award will be given to 4 local schools with the highest participation rate of students that ride to school that day. Students who biked to school this day must make sure they are counted by their onsite rep between 6-9am. One each for elementary, middle school, high school and alternative schools with the greatest percentage. FBO will be providing breakfasts and prizes for cyclists (with a helmet) at the high schools.
- Check your school representative for other events at your school. We are finding these folks for each school.
- We are sponsoring the 2nd annual Student Bicycle Short Film Contest. The top 3 winners will get cash prizes of $200, $100 and $50. Helmets must be worn by all riders in the movie to qualify.
