flagstaff_hs1.jpgOur focus includes encouraging school-age children and their parents to ride their bike safely to school. The emphasis of Bike to School Day is to help both children and parents enjoy the rewards of riding a bicycle. Alternative transportation, health, safety, and fun are the cornerstones of the program.

Take the time to pick a route with your kids and escort a group to school. It is amazing the fun and freedom that a bicycle can represent.

The Golden Sprocket School Challenge: How to Play…
For high school, middle school, alternative school and elementary students we have arranged an interschool challenge Thursday morning to see who can attract the highest percentage of riders. The winners will keep the trophy for a year, and other incentives will include prizes, games, movies, breakfast, and maintenance clinics sponsored by each school. In 2008, over 300 school kids logged their ride to school. Sinagua High School and Northland Academy Prep won the coveted Golden Sprockets! Check out school results HERE! The School Challenge runs from 6:30am to 9:30am. Each school that wishes to compete must track the number of students that bike to school, as well as total enrollment on Thursday. Those numbers must be reported to FBO by 11am.Model of the Golden Sprocket Trophy

  • So each rider counts, we encourage schools to procure a “Student Coordinator” who can register their school; organize, motivate and count each student that cycles. It will not be necessary for students to log in to our website, but they are welcome to. The Student Coordinator has from 6am to 9:30 am to count student bike commuters and report Thursday’s enrollment.
  • Once again, permanent staff will log-in separately from sudents. Both are welcome to log-in all week, but students aren’t included in the worksite challenge.
  • The Golden Sprocket challenge includes 4 awards: one for high school (CHS, FHS, SHS), middle school (MEMS, FMS), alternative schools, and elementary schools (. Based on percentages of student enrollment that day.
  • Have fun with this! Count the number of cars in the parking lots and bicycles in the racks once a week until the challenge starts to see how much people participate! Think of ways to get your friends to join in.
  • Challenge your friends and neighbors in private or parochial schools that haven’t participated yet to get involved and join the challenge!
  • For Some Elementary Schools we will have assemblies to demonstrate bicycle safety and fun during the week. This is an opportunity to have an informational teaching session on bicycle safety for students from fresh sources. During the visit the presenter will deliver a 10 to 15 minute bike/helmet safety presentation. The presenters will cover bike lanes, rules, hand-signals, biking etiquette. We will also provide a simple bike safety handout and a bike sticker to each child in your classroom. Another aspect of the presentation includes an informative 10-minute video. It would be helpful if a TV/VCR would be available for this part of the lesson. If you are a teacher wanting to arrange a visit contact Melissa at (928) 606-1533 or email.

We are having the Second Annual Student Film Contest!
Any K-12 Student is encouraged to produce a film short about bicycling. The film can be documentary, a story, a safety video–use your imagination! BUT, All cyclists in the film MUST be wearing a helmet for the film to qualify.
    3 Winners! 1st, 2nd and 3rd place win $200, $100 and $50, respectively. Sweet!

Submit your video to Melissa at (928) 606-1533 or email her.

We will show the top 3 Student Films (at least, time permitting, all will be shown), award the 1st through 3rd places, and award the winners of the Golden Sprockets Thursday Night at the Thorpe Park Community Center, from 7-9pm.
