Thursday-Bike to School

flagstaff_hs1.jpgOur focus includes encouraging school-age children and their parents to ride their bike safely to school. The emphasis of Bike to School Day is to help both children and parents enjoy the rewards of riding a bicycle. Alternative transportation, health, safety, and fun are the cornerstones of the program.

Take the time to pick a route with your kids and escort a group to school. It is amazing the freedom that a bicycle can represent.

The Golden Sprocket School Challenge: How to Play…
For high school and (and this year, middle school students) we have arranged an interschool challenge Thursday morning to see who can attract the highest percentage of riders. The winners will keep the trophy for a year, and other incentives will include prizes, games, movies, breakfast, and a maintenance clinics. Last year over 150 high school kids rode to school and Sinagua High School won the coveted Golden Sprocket!

  • So each rider counts, we encourage schools to procure a “Student Coordinator” who can register their school, organize and count their fellow students, get them to log into our website, or log-in for them, between Wednesday midnight and 10 am on Thursday.
  • This year, permanent staff will log-in separately from sudents. Both are welcome to log-in all week, but students aren’t included in the worksite challenge.
  • The Golden Sprocket challenge includes 2 awards: one for high school, one for middle schools. Based on percentages.
  • Have fun with this! Count the number of cars in the parking lots and bicycles in the racks once a week until the challenge starts to see how much people can participate! Think of ways to get your friends to join in.
  • Challenge your friends and neighbors in private or parochial schools that haven’t participated yet to get involved and join the challenge!
  • For Elementary Schools we have local riders and professional racers going into classes from grades 2-8 during the week. This is an opportunity to have an informational teaching session on bicycle safety for students from a fresh sources. During the visit the presenter will deliver a 10 to 15 minute bike/helmet safety presentation. The presenters will cover bike lanes, rules, hand-signals, biking etiquette. We will also provide a simple bike safety handout and a bike sticker to each child in your classroom. Another aspect of the presentation includes an informative 10-minute video. It would be helpful if a TV/VCR would be available for this part of the lesson. If you are a teacher wanting to arrange a visit contact Melissa at (928) 606-1533 or email.

We will also be presenting a Bicycle Rodeo at Pine Forest Elementary in celebration of Bike to School Day. If you would like to help with this event, please contact Melissa for details.
