Bike to Work Week
Bike to Work Week is May 11th-May 16th, 2008!
FBO has sponsored Bike to Work Week in Flagstaff since 2002. We want to remind all you bike owners out there to dust off your ride, register your workplace and prepare to flood the streets, paths, and bike lanes, with fun loving cyclists. But don’t save your bike just for a week in May–Flagstaff’s fine climate allows biking much of the year!
Bike to work week demonstrates the tremendous potential Flagstaff’s population has to make a difference by commuting by bicycle. We can make that difference count more and more by bike commuting more often. Let’s keep the FUTS trails busy with cyclists and make every week Bike To Work Week.
EVENT SCHEDULE:
May 11th - Sunday: 9 am to 3 pm
Heritage Square Downtown Flagstaff
Kick off the week with hundreds of your bicycling brethren.
Human Powered Parade:
Everyone loves a parade, but why are they always full of pollution spewing cars and trucks with people inside waving? During last year’s event we saw that Flagstaff can do better. If you can pull it, push it, ride it, carry it, or wear it: FAIR GAME. The more outrageous the better! We will have a longer parade route this year- but still flat. Starts downtown at Cherry and Leroux at 11 AM. Awards will be given out to the two best decorated bikes.
Bike Bazaar
Building on the success of previous years we are increasing the number of activities in the square so that there will be something for everyone from the newbie, to commuter to racer, young and old. We are advertising the events throughout the State so we should see a good turnout for the events.
Bike Swap
A great opportunity to cheaply stock up on needed and/or desired bike gear. Tables are available for a $20 donation to set up your wares for sale. (You can split tables with friends.) As with last year, we are expecting buyers and sellers from across AZ. Flagstaffians have some great gear!
Call David McKee at (928) 699-4728 if you wish to reserve a large table to sell goods.
Bike Recycling
Get a great deal on refurbished bikes and support FBO. FBO will fix up donated bikes and get them to people who need them.
If you wish to donate bicycles or parts that we can use for repairs, please contact Susan
May 12th - Monday
Time to dust off your ride, register your workplace and prepare to flood the streets, paths, and bike lanes, with fun loving cyclists.
Bike to Work Challenge - Monday through Thursday
This year, the Bike to Work challenge lasts 4 days rather than one, from Sunday midnight to Thursday noon. The two winning worksites of the commuter challenge get a beautiful new Breezer Freedom commuter bike to use for local errands. Coordinators volunteering for each participating business will encourage their coworkers to try bicycle commuting; lowering their carbon footprint, feeling healthier, and reducing congestion on Flagstaff streets.
7:30am - Kick-off Commuter Ride from City Hall
Come join local elected leaders, officials, and hundreds of your friends for a short “commuter” ride through downtown to finish in Heritage Square for a free breakfast. Hundreds of cyclists sharing the roads makes a statement. The gathering at Heritage Square will celebrate the efforts of specific worksites and individuals to improve biking and walking in our community.
Brick awards to be announced to community members that have gone upon and beyond for cycling in Flagstaff.
May 13th - Tuesday
“Jack and Martin’s Excellent FUTS Adventure” Cruiser Ride - Starts at 6 pm
We are having a cruiser ride Tuesday night starting at Pay-n-Take on Aspen Street. Come on out and join in the two wheeled fun. Bring out your townies, your Schwinn tandems and your old balloon tired pride and joy or even that ol’ Ti or Carbon thang ya got lying around. Ride starts at 6:00 pm or thereabouts. Not to exceed one half hour in length with uniformed Police escort to keep cars at bay. All riders welcome.

Bike to School Day!
We are encouraging parents to ride with their kids to school or in the case of high school students: leave the car at home for a day.
- We will be hosting a “Cylce Train” at Thomas Elementary School. Adult “conductors” will escort kids to school on a prescribed route to teach Flagstaff’s youth the joy of bike commuting can compete with couch-time. Contact melissa@flagstaffbiking.org for details or assistance.
- Local riders and racers will be going into schools and talking about the joys of bicycling and try and teach some safe riding while they are at it.
- * Flagstaff Biking will be hosting a Safe Kids bike rodeo at Pine Forest Elementary.
- Two “Golden Sprocket” award will be given to a local high school and middle school that has the greatest percentage of students ride to school that day. FBO will be providing breakfasts and prizes for all who ride (with a helmet) to Sinagua, Coconino and Flagstaff High.
Bike Movies and Awards!
Movie Night at the Orpheum starting at 6:00 pm. We are hosting the state-wide premier of the widely acclaimed producers, the Collective’s latest mountain biking movie: SEASONS. Worksite Challenge winners to be awarded during film intermission along with other fabulous prizes. Tickets $5 dollars at the door. Bar will be open for business at 6 pm.
May 16th - Friday
Don’t forget to login this last day! There are still Raffle drawings for folks that bike on Friday, even if the worksite challenge is over.
Bike to Potluck Cyclo-Bration!
To wind the week down, we are hosting a potluck at Thorpe Park’s Ramada, starting around 6:00 PM. Bring your own table service and beverage, and a dish to share. Let’s see who is most creative in delivering a tasty comestible via bicycle! There will be a large BBQ for those wishing to grill. If weather allows, we may show a biking movie.
It is a potluck, but as a voluntary guideline, we might suggest the following based on your last name:
- A-D: Appetizer
- E-K: Dessert
- L-P: Carb-loading Side dish
- R-Z: Anti-oxidant-rich Vegetable /Salad
Let’s see how creative you can be toting your potluck via bike!
