Join the Moonlight Madness Ride Friday!

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

Join Flagstaff Biking Organization’s famous annual Moonlight Madness Ride (formerly called the Giro de la Luna ride) Friday night, August 7th!

This Family, Fun & Fitness ride leaves from the downtown Mt Line bus transfer station on West Phoenix Ave (near Biff’s Bagels and across from Fratelli Pizza, see Google map here). We will explore about 10 miles of Flagstaff’s Urban trails. The sun sets at 7:23pm, the Moon rises at 7:45pm, and we pedal into the sunset at 8pm, returning around 10pm. No one is left behind.

You need to bring a good working bike, a helmet; a mounted flashlight, headlight or lighting system; blinkie light or rear reflector, and light and/or reflective clothing for cooling (yeah!) temperatures. Be prepared to ride on paved and gravel surfaced FUTS trails (Flag Urban Trails). There are a few short but steep hills, but it’s mostly flat.

Last year we had great turn-out and everyone had a blast… Beat the Heat and Join the Flagstaff’s Night Set for this Cooool adventure! Finish Friday Art Walk with a bang!

We will have some raffle prizes, and offer FBO Blinkie lights ($15) and memberships to support FBO.
This is an FBO Martin & Jack Adventure! If you have any questions, contact Susan!

Loop Trail Day this Saturday, July 11th on Observatory Mesa

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

Join our next Loop Trail work day on Observatory Mesa this Saturday, July 11th!Flagstaff Loop Trail Logo

We got a great start on this trail National Trail Day in June; we hope to connect to Cheshire this summer, please help us. Trail building is fun, you meet great folks who share your love of Flagstaff Trails, and you become part of the legacy of the Loop Trail in this great town. Saturday’s FORECAST = “Partly cloudy, High 85″.–Perfect!

We are staging once again on Observatory Mesa. Follow signs 1.6 miles from Thorpe Rd near Bark Park, north to Kinlani Dr, R on Curling Smoke Rd, R on Hogan Dr to cattle guard on left. Here’s a google MAP. The quarter mile of road after the cattle guard is a little rough. Our passenger car did fine, but some may prefer to hike or bike that last quarter mile.

We will serve coffee at 8am, followed by a short trail safety talk. Work begins at 8:30 and goes until lunch time.

Please come with sturdy shoes, long pants, water, sunscreen, and a hat or bike helmet; and gloves if you have some. Consider bringing raingear, weather is changesome. We will provide hard-hats, tools and equipment, guidance and training. Kids under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

You can help us prepare for the Loop Trail Day by pre-registering now so we can estimate lunch, coffee and equipment quantities. THANKS!

The BIKE RIDE has been cancelled due to an injury of one of the ride leaders!  We apologize for any inconvenience.

Bring your mountain bike! We will also be hosting a 5-10 mile no-drop group ride on the Mesa following the trail work and lunch. Bring your helmet and Join us!

Thanks to Biff’s Bagels, Late for the Train, and Coconino County Supervisor Matt Ryan for sponsoring this trail day.

FBO Membership Drive almost there!

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

We have almost reached our Bike to Work Month membership drive goals but we need your help!

Bike to Work Week 2009 was a spectacular success.. With 1250 folks pedalling over 28,000 miles, we kept 15.4 metric tons of carbon from the air and burned over 260 pounds of human kibble. And we felt great!

But Flagstaff Biking’s Bike to Work Week, youth & adult education and riding programs, and trail work need an active membership. Please help us meet our goals…you won’t be barricaded from your favorite urban or singletrack trail, but we know you value these benefits of Flagstaff Biking Organization’s bike advocacy.

Help us now! Join Flagstaff Biking organization online with Paypal Here! Your bike will thank us.

*******

Bike to Work Week News: The Winner of the Bike to Work Week Photo Contest is John Shoup. His photo of his morning trek through Ft Tuthill wins him a Burley Flatbed Bike Trailer donated generously from the Bike Shop Hub. Congratulations John!

Thanks to the other folks that submitted photos… you didn’t make the choice easy… Go HERE to see the other entries.

Keep Pedalling!

Bike to Work Week Concludes…

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

Please support our sponsors so they can contribute to us. Click here to find out how!

So ends another triumphant Bike to Work, School and Errands Week!

But does bike to work week really ever conclude…??? I don’t think so!

It is a Spectacular and Never-Ending EVENT!

Over 1250 pedalers logged in 3400 times last week for a distance of 28,000 miles! That’s more than 8000 miles and 850 more log-ins than 2008!

What we accomplished…

  • We pedaled away 260 pounds of fat
  • The equivalent of eating either 1300 Big Macs, 5400 veggie burgers, 6000 Fat Tire ales, or 21,000 servings of broccoli.
  • We spared our air… 1800 gallons of gasoline, 9300 pounds of CARBON, and 15.4 Metric TONS of Carbon Dioxide!
  • We burned of 2200 hours of stress!
  • The average commute was 8.3 miles and took about 38 minutes.

Bikes are awesome! As are the folks that ride them!

Winners of the Worksites Challenge were announced on The EAGLE on Monday May 18th at 9:12 am. And they are…

Large Worksite: Lowell Observatory under Allison Bair’s leadership: 52%, 8.3 miles/commute. Contenders at the USGS were once again squeezed out at 46%, FMC-ICU and COF Public Library tied for 3rd. This is Lowell’s 3rd Breezer Bike win.

Medium Worksite: AZ Raft Adventures under Kim Lucy 57.4% and 7.7 miles/commute, in a very tight competition with NAU Ecological Restoration Inst and Bookmans… all within 1.5%. AZRA’s high mileage was their trump card. This is AZRA’s FIRST (correction-we got it wrong) Breezer Bike. Congratulations!

Small Worksite: Absolute Bikes under Anthony Quintile’s firm hand, garnering 100% once again. This prize they’re keeping! Lunch at Fratelli Pizza. They were chased by COF Sustainability & Environmental Management, and tied COF Police-Community Relations and NAU Honors Program, all in the 80%’s.

Nanos: Project TIA Elementary, 100%, and Flag Metro Planning Org 80%.

The MTB v Roadies Challenge: The ambidextrous and commuters came out on top with 14,500 mi pedaled, but perhaps not surprisingly, the mountain bikers (5,750 miles) trumped the roadies (2,780 miles) in this mountain town with limited clear pavement… Next year may change things when the Lk Mary road expansion is open!

Friday… the Cyclo-bration at Uptown Billiards was a nice and mellow conclusion to the week. Diane Peterson held the lucky ticket for the New Belgium Brewery Red Cruiser Bike. That was one happy gal! Photo contest entries were up for voting but the winner of the Burley Flatbed Trailer is still in the air. We will post the digital photos as soon as possible.
