Come by Altitudes Bar and Grill tonight from 5pm to 7pm to pick up your Worksite Information Packet for Bike to Work Week! Altitudes is at 2 Beaver Street just south of the Railroad tracks.

Bicycle Safety Class

Would you like to attend a Bicycle Safety Class taught by the League of American Bicyclists (LAB)? The LAB is considering teaching a class in May in Flagstaff and would like to know if you’d like to come! This is a great way to gear up for Bike to Work Week! The cost is $15/per person.

Floyd Landis rides with Flagstaff

Pro Cyclist legend, Floyd Landis, led a ride to raise awareness for joint health on Saturday, October 4th on Lake Mary Road. The ride was presented by Smith and Nephew, an orthopedic prosthesis company, and benefited local cycling advocacy organization, Flagstaff Biking Organization. Over 30 individuals came to join the ride. Floyd Landis helped Lance Armstrong win the 2002 Tour de France. In January of 2003, Floyd crashed in training and fractured his hip, badly displacing the head of the femur. In 2006, Floyd’s hip pain increased as he won the inaugural Tour of California, the Paris-Nice stage race, and the 2006 Tour de Georgia. In September of 2006 he received a BHR^? Hip prosthesis, made by Smith and Nephew. More photos can be seen at here.

Father’s Day Pancake ride-June 15th

What better way to celebrate Father’s Day than at a FBO Pancake Ride! Join us at Schultz Creek Trail head on Sunday, June 15th for guided rides and a trailside brunch. This year, due to popular demand, we’re going to mix it up and have the rides leave at 9am and have the food following, starting at 11am. This event is FREE! Rides will be for all levels (youth, beginner to advanced). Need not be a father to come and join us… but it helps if you’ve had one.

Under the Stars Night Race-June 14th

Mountain Racing Sports is presenting a night race this Saturday, June 14th. The race will start around 6:30 pm and race into the night! The moon will be at ¾ for this event. That should provide some additional sight.

Race Across America coming to Flagstaff-Volunteers Needed

The Race Across America is one of the most respected and longest running annual endurance events holding legendary stature the world over. It is one of the pinnacles of sporting accomplishment, globally seen as the highest rung of the ultra-endurance sports ladder. Since 1982, RAAM has a rich and storied history standing as a monument to human endeavors.

The Race Across America is an event so staggering that merely to finish is, for most, the accomplishment of a lifetime. RAAM inspires everyone that it touches. A monumental race contested with the utmost of sportsmanship and zeal. Truly, RAAM is larger than life. A breeding ground for champions, a testing ground for elite riders and a shining example of the strength of human spirit.

Summit Velo is sponsoring the Time Station 08, located at Safeway/McDonalds parking lot in east Flagstaff.

We are looking for people interested in volunteering at the time station from Monday June 9th to Thursday June 12th.

Awards for the 24 HOUR Challenge will be Monday early afternoon Oceanside, CA to Flagstaff.

Ride of Silence tonight from FMC

THE RIDE OF SILENCE

On May 21, 2008, at 6:00 PM, the Ride of Silence will begin at Flagstaff Medical Center in the West Campus Parking lot and roll across the globe. The Flagstaff ride will ride down Beaver street, through downtown and end back at FMC. All are welcome. Cyclists will take to the roads in a silent procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways. Although cyclists have a legal right to share the road with motorists, the motoring public often isn’t aware of these rights, and sometimes not aware of the cyclists themselves.

The Ride Of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclists to ride no faster than 12 mph and remain silent during the ride. The ride, which is held during Bike Safety month, aims to raise the awareness of motorists, police and city officials that cyclists have a legal right to the public roadways. The ride is also a chance to show respect for those who have been killed or injured.

Bike to Work Week Volunteers needed!

Hello Cyclists!

If you have some extra time this Sunday, and would like to help out with Bike to Work Week, FBO could use some help with the Sunday Bike To Work Week Bike Bazaar.

We need:

3-4 volunteers on Sunday morning (~6:30-7am) to unload and setup tables at Heritage Square
2-3 volunteers on Sunday evening to load and then unload tables from Heritage Square when the bazaar is over at 3pm.
4-6 volunteers to flag at intersections during the parade from 11-11:40 AM.

Please Email or call to confirm which tasks you want to sign on for. Stay posted… there will be other tasks we will need support on through the week.

Flagstaff’s First Annual Bicycle Town Hall Meeting!

Interested in making Flagstaff more bicycle-friendly? Please join us for Flagstaff’s first annual Bicycle Town Hall Meeting on Wednesday, May 14, 2008, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm in the lobby of the Flagstaff City Hall at 211 West Aspen Avenue.

The meeting will be hosted by the City of Flagstaff and is being held in conjunction with Flagstaff’s Bike-to-Work Week events.

The intent of the Bicycle Town Hall Meeting is to give the community an opportunity to learn what’s being done to make Flagstaff a better place for bicycles, and to help City officials and other agencies learn what’s important to the community regarding accommodation of bicycles.

The theme of this event, and the City’s goal, is to make bicycling in Flagstaff an appealing option for everyone – so kids can ride to school, for a man who wants to get back in shape, a woman who uses her bike for errands for the sheer joy of it, a family who can better afford housing if they only have one car, or a student who wants to do their part to make Flagstaff more sustainable. We need to hear from you!

A number of City of Flagstaff functions will be represented at the meeting, including the urban trails, bicycle, and pedestrian program, the sustainability program, the traffic section, and the police department.

Additionally, a number of other agencies and organizations who promote bicycling will participate in the town hall meeting, including Flagstaff Biking Organization, Coconino County’s SafeKids and Safe Routes to School programs, the Arizona Department of Transportation’s bicycle and pedestrian program, the Flagstaff Metropolitan Planning Organization, Friends of Flagstaff’s Future, the Arizona Trail Association, Coalition of Arizona Bicyclists, and the Coconino Cycling Club.

The meeting will follow an open house format, so there is opportunity for casual discussion with City staff and representatives from other agencies and organizations. There will also be an opportunity to provide written comments, which will be compiled following the meeting and made available to all participants.

You can register your worksite for the Bike to Work Week Worksite Challenge NOW! Join Flagstaff’s Pedalers, grab some friends and a worksite, and be a cycle hero!

If your worksite is larger than 100 people, consider subdividing it and recruiting another coordinator. It’s easier to encourage and motivate people you see more frequently.
