-Contacting potential and past worksites and managing and delivering/distributing Worksite Coordinator informational packets
-Collecting and distributing raffle prizes
-Assisting in writing copy for daily updates and other event collateral
-Assisting in setting up media opportunities at the awarding of the prize bikes for the Challenge winners
-Various and sundry other duties and help

If you have any questions, please email info@flagstaffbiking.org

Thanks-

Because of State budget woes, there is legislation being considered that would take away millions of dollars of funding for the Arizona State Parks department.

Not only would this potentially close many of our State Parks, including Deadhorse Ranch State Park in Cottonwood, location of some great nearby winter mountain biking opportunities, it could severely impact monies spent on trails and trails planning within the State.

Although you may not be directly aware, money administered by the Arizona State Parks has helped to build many of our favorite trails, including the Flagstaff Loop Trail, Deer Hill Trail, the Fort Valley Trail System and others. See here for details on what is going on and who to contact to voice your concerns:

http://arizonastateparksfoundation.org/advocacy.html

Please take a minute to help support parks and trails in Arizona!

It has been 25 years since a new National Scenic Trail has been designated in America. That has now changed.

Yesterday, President Obama signed the Omnibus Public Lands Bill passed last week by Congress. The bill includes the prestigious designation of the Arizona Trail as a National Scenic Trail. Arizona National Scenic Trail efforts have been supported by a bipartisan group of Arizona federal and state elected officials led by Senators John McCain and Jon Kyl and Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. In addition to the Arizona Trail, the Pacific Northwest Trail and New England Trail joined an exclusive group of eight existing National Scenic Trails.

For years we have heard numerous requests for reasons why Arizona Snowbowl hasn’t built a downhill mountain bike park. The reasons are good and many, but that doesn’t mean that this could never be accomplished. Join us in demonstrating that there is considerable demand within the cycling community for an inclusive, lift assisted bike park at Arizona Snowbowl that would appeal to everyone from families and beginner riders to extreme athletes. This petition is in no way a guarantee that the Snowbowl would build a park, but merely a “show of hands” in favor of the concept.

Check in with your favorite local bike shop in Flagstaff, (and some other nearby communities), to sign a paper petition, or click HERE to sign an online petition in support of this concept. If enough people are excited about this, we’ll see how we might be able to help get this done.

At long last, the U.S. National Park Service (NPS) has proposed a rule change which will make it easier for parks to open trails for mountain biking. IMBA, (International Mountain Bicycling Association), urges mountain bikers to register comments in support of the rule change. IMBA has been asking for this change since the 1990s. This rule would still require a full NEPA, (National Environmental Policy Act), analysis to open a trail to bicycles, but would ease the current special regulation requirements.

There are people who are opposed to this idea because they are concerned that a trail near their neighborhood may attract unsavory types. Come out and demonstrate that trail users are good folks!

An Information/ Public Comment Meeting on the proposed Timberline Trail Project will be held on Wednesday, January 14th , from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Summit Fire Station 33 on North Hwy 89 (just past Second Chance Animal Shelter). The U.S. Forest Service, in partnership with Coconino County’s Parks & Recreation Department and Flagstaff Biking Organization, are proposing the construction of a new non-motorized trail from the Timberline area south to the City of Flagstaff boundary. The proposed trail is intended for hikers, bicyclists and equestrians from east-side neighborhoods to access popular Forest trails, Flagstaff Urban Trail System (FUTS), and the new Flagstaff Loop Trail. The trail alignment consolidates existing unauthorized trails, Forest roads, and new construction into a single right-of-way that respects Forest resources and provides free, high-quality recreation.
For more information contact Brian Poturalski at Peaks Ranger Station at (928) 526-0866 or email bpoturalski@fs.fed.us .

Pedals were 17 strong and gave up the trophy. No peds or ponies were in evidence, but it could be argued this wasn’t the trail to draw them. Mea culpa. It wasn’t fair.

On the Carbon footprint challenge, the results were indisputable: Pedals Prevailed. Based on how people arrived to the meeting place for the trail day….

Pistons: drove about eight 4×4 crew cab full size pickups (many towing trailers with dirtbikes), four or more minivans, a handful of smaller station wagons and pickups. About 2/3rds of their force drove from Phoenix Arizona Trail Riders. To their credit, seats were mostly full, but…CHA-CHING! That’s A LOT of petroleum!

Pedals: 2 mountain bikers pedaled their way up Snowbowl road (Go Aaron and John!!), in addition to a couple smaller trucks, 3 small station wagons and a minivan. GO PEDALERS!!! Righteous!
