Thanks to the assistance of the City’s multimodal planner, we now have a complete summary of all FUTS related projects that are on the books for the City. This allows greater transparency, and opportunity for comment and inquiries to the people that know. We will update the details as needed. We have wanted this for years…
FUTS Projects
Project:
North 89 Trail
Description:
1.2 miles of paved FUTS along the west side of Highway 89 from Railhead Avenue to Snowflake Drive.
Status:
Construction plans are currently under review.

Project:
Santa Fe West Trail – Walnut to Rio
Description:
A quarter-mile section of FUTS trail along the north side of the BNSF railroad tracks from Walnut Street to the Rio de Flag in Colton Park. A pedestrian/bicycle bridge will be constructed as part of the project across Route 66 on the north side of the railroad overpass.
Status:
Staff is working with BNSF on the alignment of the trail.

Project:
Santa Fe West Trail – West Village to Walnut
Description:
A one-mile section FUTS along the south side of the BNSF tracks from an existing FUTS at the east end of the Railroad Springs neighborhood to the end of Clay Avenue. A grade-separated crossing of the BNSF tracks between Walnut and Florence Streets will be built as a later phase of the project.
Status:
Staff is working with BNSF on the alignment of the trail.

Project:
Fort Valley Pathway
Description:
The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) will be installing a paved pathway, totaling 2.3 miles in length, along Fort Valley Road from Navajo Road to Elden Lookout Road/Fremont Street. South of Sechrist School, the trail will be on the west side of the Forth Valley Road; and from Sechrist School north the trail will follow the east side of Fort Valley Road.
Status:
Construction plans are complete; ADOT will bid the project in December 2006.

Project:
Rio North Trail
Description:
Trail generally follows the Rio de Flag for 1.5 miles from the end of the existing trail at Crescent Drive to Fremont Street.
Status:
Construction of the south end of the trail (from Crescent to Lynette) will begin at the end of October. The north section (Lynette to Fremont) will be constructed in the spring of 2007.

Route 66 Trail
Description:
A quarter-mile section of paved FUTS on the south side of Route 66 from Colton Park to San Francisco Street.

Design and construction documents are being prepared.

Project:
Cedar Avenue Bridge
Description:
A pedestrian/bicycle bridge over Cedar Avenue on the top of McMillan Mesa will link two existing FUTS trails. FUTS trails on both sides of the bridge are part of the Arizona Trail system.
Status:
Completion is anticipated for the end of October.

Project:
FUTS Signage Program
Description:
Implementation of a comprehensive system of regulatory, directional, informational, trailhead, and interpretive signs for the FUTS trail system.
Status:
The City is in the process of retaining a consultant to oversee preparation of design documents and fabrication and installation of the signs.

FUTS in Other Transportation Projects
Project:
Route 66 East Trail - East Flagstaff Traffic Interchange
Description:
The East Flagstaff Traffic Interchange project will redesign and reconstruct the interchange at Highway 89, Route 66, and Country Club Drive. A total 1.75 miles of new FUTS trails will be built as part of the project. Bicycle/pedestrian tunnels will also be constructed under Route 66 and Highway 89 to help cyclists and pedestrians through the intersection.
Status:
Construction is underway.
